Background

• The AI x Design workshop series, titled “Application of AI x Design in Disaster Areas: Prevention, Survival and Analysis” were held on two Saturdays in July 2021.

• 25 students from Advertising (AD), Landscape Architecture (LA), Information and Communications Technology (ICT), Multimedia Technology and Innovation (MTI) and Surveying (SUR) participated in the event.

• Dr David Williams from Global Digital MOJO taught students to make use of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning skills to tackle the problems found during natural disasters such as Earthquake and COVID-19 pandemic.

• Dr Williams taught the students via 3D virtual classrooms and Zoom online broadcast.

Student Story from the Workshop Series

• Improper mask-wearing during COVID pandemic, using live image recognition and machine learning, to identify people who are:

• Wearing the face masks properly

• Improper wearing the face masks

• Did not wear a face mask

• Another group, teaming up AD, ICT, MTI, SUR and LA students, try to identify collapsed roads and trees from drone-captured images using machine learning, in order to let the rescue team quickly identify which area in the city needs immediate attention.

• The platform they implemented is Google Teachable Machine and BigML, both are machine learning platforms.
