THEi Fashion Design student at THEi wins a Medallion for Excellence in Fashion Technology at the WorldSkills Competition 2022 Nisham LIMBU, a Year-4 Fashion Design student, has won a Medallion for Excellence in Fashion Technology in the WorldSkills Competition 2022. This year, the competition was held in Helsinki, Finland from 20 to 23 October, 2022. A total of 20 participants from 20 countries and regions participated in the “Fashion Technology” competition. The competition required participants to combine creativity, aesthetics, and technical knowledge, with appropriate tools, craftsmanship, and technology to handle different materials, to design and tailor clothing to attract customers. For Fashion Technology trade there were 4 modules each competitor had to complete within 18 hours in 4 days. Pattern making (3 hours)Competitors were given a production drawing of a skirt (front and back) and they had to draft the basic block according to it. They also had to cut out the pattern pieces and laid it out and pinned on fabric appropriately. Draping (1.5 hours)Competitors were given a picture of a front dress to drape on a dummy. They then had to drape according to the reference and had to use their own creativity to design the back side of the garment. Garment Construction (12 hours)The competitors were given 1 minute to check the basic block measurement to further adjust to their own jacket design following the theme. They were to complete a jacket with full lining within 12 hours. There were variety of garment components which were then drawn in the ballot draw and competitors had to come up with their own design following the theme. Design sketching (1.5 hours)There were categories of garment products lines and competitors were given a swatch of fabric to complete 2-4 technical drawing of fashion collections that best suits the swatch as well as the target market. Nisham is a Nepalese from Hong Kong. Inspired by her mother, she developed a strong interest in fashion design.She completed a Diploma of Foundation Studies at the Hong Kong Institute of Vocational Education (IVE) and then the Hong Kong Design Institute’s (HKDI) Higher Diploma in Fashion Design before articulating to THEi. Nisham is currently a Year-4 Fashion Design student from THEi. This year, Nisham was selected to be the Hong Kong representative in Fashion Technology in the WorldSkills Competition. Nisham said, “I would like to thank THEi for providing me with facilities, materials, and guidance for intensive training so that I can develop my skills and achieve professional industry standards.” ![]() |
Fashion Design Alumni Shine at the YDC 2022 Hong Kong Young Designers’ Contest (YDC) is open to Hong Kong residents with training or experience in fashion design. It is considered by many a rite of passage for local designers who want to challenge themselves and gain exposure on the global stage. Lorraine TAM Lok Yee, as 2018 alumnus of THEi Fashion Design programme shone brightly at YDC 2022. Her colourful and energetic collection entitled “I am not infected” was awarded the Excellence Award and The Best Visual Presentation in the contest. The collection employs colourful patterns and different embellishment techniques to present the story. ![]() |
Advertising Students Swept 3 Big Awards from Hong Kong Creative PR Competition 2022 Three Year-4 students of the Advertising programme from the 2021 cohort won the following major awards from the Hong Kong Creative PR Competition 2022 on 20 August 2022. The competition drew participation from more than 500 teams and individuals from tertiary institutes and secondary schools in Hong Kong. THEi Winners of Gold Awards in Tertiary Individual Cetagory 大專個人組金獎(雙冠軍) : Miss CHAN Hei Wai (Topic: Lee Kum Kee)Miss WONG Man Ho (Topic: Nam Fung Group) Judge Award 品牌卓越大獎: Mr WONG Kin Fung (Topic: Sino Group) Hong Kong Creative PR Competition hosted by the Committee of HKCPRC is the only competition between educational institutions that utilizes public relations as its theme, tying together the elements of creativity, implementation and interaction. Participants had the chance to develop their PR skills across multiple areas of expertise, including strategy planning, copywriting, video production, event management, social media marketing, product promotions through PR platforms and experiences, preparing them for the real-life challenges that lie ahead in the business and PR world. There were 7 industry partners including Lee Kum Kee, Nan Fung Group, Sino Group and Watsons who acted as clients for students to develop their works in the competition. ![]() |

Collaboration with Hongkong Post to Produce a Special Stamp Issue: Intangible Cultural Heritage – Hong Kong Cheongsam making Technique The Department of Design of the Faculty of Design and Environment collaborated with Hongkong Post, the Intangible Cultural Heritage Office, and designer to produce a series of works on the making technique of cheongsams in Hong Kong. THEi’s Department of Design, detailed the production process of cheongsams on the event website to promote the unique culture of Chinese cheongsams to the public. Hong Kong cheongsam making technique was inscribed onto the First Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH) Inventory of Hong Kong and the Representative List of the ICH of Hong Kong in 2014 and 2017 respectively. It was further inscribed onto the Fifth National List of ICH in 2021. The origin of the cheongsam dates back decades. With a large number of rich merchants and tailors migrating from Shanghai to Hong Kong in the mid-20th century, women’s cheongsam in Hong Kong started to gain popularity. Women’s cheongsam was influenced by both traditional Chinese techniques and Western aesthetics, creating a unique Hong Kong-style cheongsam making technique. The special stamp issue and associated philatelic products on the theme of “Intangible Cultural Heritage – Hong Kong Cheongsam Making Technique” to showcase the outstanding historical and cultural value of this craftsmanship was released for sale on 22 September 2022. FMH | THEi 10th Anniversary Industry Seminar Series – 淺談電子競技:電子競技的過去、現在與未來 by the Hon Kenneth FOK, JP | 6 October 2022 The Faculty of Management and Hospitality had successfully organized a seminar entitled “淺談電子競技:電子競技的過去、現在與未來” in THEi 10th Anniversary Industry Seminar Series on 6 October 2022. The Sports and Recreation Management programme invited the Hon FOK Kai-kong, Kenneth, JP, a current HKSAR LegCo Member, President of Asian Electronic Sports Federation, Vice President of the Sports Federation & Olympic Committee of Hong Kong, China and Adjunct Professor of THEi, to talk about the past, present and future of E-sports. He introduced the background of the Asian Electronic Sports Federation, the E-Sports market cap and volume, the difference between electronic sports and traditional sports, the application of technology in sports, as well as the career opportunities in E-sports. CLP Distribution Box Beautification Project CLP’s Distribution Box Beautification Project is set out to connect the community through art and innovation for a greener and sustainable future. To enhance the engagement with the community, CLP partnered with students from the Advertising programme and local artists this year to bring a touch of contemporary art depicting local landmarks, culture and green elements for selected distribution boxes. Art Tech is applied in the design to enhance the interaction and engagement with audiences through IG filters. The Community Power Journey for general public is also introduced in this Project. Through the appreciation of beautified distribution boxes and local landmarks, tour participants will be able to gain knowledge in electricity, energy conservation and local history and culture. The project covers the 14 districts of CLP’s supply areas in Kowloon, New Territories, and the outlying islands, including Yau Tsim Mong, Kwun Tong, Shatin and Tung Chung. THEi and the Cosmetic and Perfumery Association of Hong Kong co-organized the First Smart Consumption Education Video Shooting Competition Quality and safety are the essentials for a smart consumer living in a shopping paradise. In order to promote smart consumption, The Cosmetic and Perfumery Association of Hong Kong (CPAHK) and THEi have jointly organized the 1st Smart Consumption Education Video Shooting Competition. This competition provides a room for students to demonstrate their professional knowledge and creativity as well as strengthen their confidence and broaden their horizon. With this significant competition, the award presentation ceremony was successfully held in Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre (HKCEC) on 13 August 2022. Three teams from THEi chalked up a win in the competition. Sports Massage Workshop delivered by THEi SRM Students and Staff in “Family Football Clinic HKJC” | 14 August 2022 Hong Kong Jockey Club (HKJC) invited Sports Therapy students and the Teaching Fellow, Miss Vicky FUNG, of the Sports and Recreation Management programme to deliver a sports massage workshop including the common sports injuries and sports massage techniques to young footballers and their parents. The Sports Therapy students were actively engaged in preparing the workshop materials and sharing their experience with the participants. All participants found the sports massage session interesting. THEi Student Applied Research Presentations 2022 | 1 August 2022 The Student Applied Research Presentations (SARP) 2022 was successfully hosted on the THEi website. Many final year students across the three faculties took part in the event this year, where a total of 74 abstracts, 62 research posters and 24 video presentations were received. Going live on 1 August 2022 for public viewing, the event had over 1,700 visits on the web pages during the period from 1 to 10 August 2022 with visitors coming from local businesses, and local and overseas education institutions. THEi President, Prof Christina HONG – Global Smart Education Conference | Beijing | 20 August 2022 and the MENA Smart Campus Summit 2022 | Dubai UAE | 22 September 2022 President of THEi, Prof Christina HONG, was invited to present at the Global Smart Education Conference 2022, co-organised by Beijing Normal University and UNESCO, 18 – 20 August, 2022. Prof HONG presented virtually on the topic of ‘Smart Learning Futures: Next generation digital education’. At the opening ceremony, research results of the ‘Rethinking and Redesigning National Smart Education Strategy’ was released and the initiative of the ‘Global Smart Education Network’ was officially launched. Prof HONG was also invited to present at the MENA Smart Campus Summit 2022, on the topic of ‘Smart Campus Reshaping the Future of Higher Education’ on 22 September 2022. The conference organized by 3novex Global, gathered 60 attendees from 34 organizations globally, was conducted physically in Le Meridien Dubai Hotel & Conference Centre, UAE. Owing to the in-bound measures under COVID, Prof HONG gave her presentation online. She made reference to the well-established smart campuses of VTC and THEi institutions to illustrate the principles and real life applications of next-generation smart campus environments, and how a smart campus supports and enhances teaching, learning and applied research. ![]() |
Assistant Professor of Horticulture, Arboriculture and Landscape Management, Dr Caroline LAW spoke at the Seminar on Tree Care and Management of the Hong Kong 2022 International Forestry Conference | 20 September 2022 Dr Caroline LAW, Assistant Professor of the Horticulture, Arboriculture and Landscape Management (HALM) programme and Programme Leader of Professional Diploma in HALM, was invited to deliver a talk on 20 September 2022 at the Seminar on Tree Care and Management, which was an extended technical session of the Hong Kong 2022 International Forestry Conference, organized by the Greening, Landscape and Tree Management Section of the Development Bureau. Dr LAW’s talk was entitled “Promoting Urban Biodiversity, Sustainability and Tree Health Through Resilient Landscape Design and Management”. The hybrid-mode seminar was well-attended by more than 100 practitioners, including landscape architects, arborists trainees, and tree climber trainees. Dr LAW shared her research on tree planting density and tree health on podium gardens, and her initiatives on onsite yard waste composting and native ornamental plant utilization. ![]() |
