This is a reminder of the use of Learning Management System Moodle for the new AY2021-22. Some best practices are also shared here. Thank you very much for your kind attention.

============================================

Moodle Access Problem for Students:

  1. Updated THEi Moodle Link: Please do not search “VTC Moodle” or “Moodle VTC” which is NOT the correct link. Search “THEi Moodle” or “Moodle THEi”; OR, Access to THEi website > QuickLinks > Moodle. The correct THEi Moodle for AY2021-2022 is [https://moodle2122.thei.edu.hk ]
  2. Moodle Mobile App: You need to update the Moodle mobile app to the correct link if you have installed the app earlier.
  3. Login: Students should login with their StudentID (or CNA), NOT the whole email address.
  4. Password: We use one password system where you change the password, all systems will be changed. Try to check and confirm the password with different systems, such as email or library e-databases.
  5. Moodle Module Participants: If students can login Moodle but could not find the Module they want, it is most probably that the students are not enrolled into the Moodle Module. Please check the participants list to enrol the students. You can also upload latest student name list (under Batch Enrol Students via Excel procedure – https://moodle2122.thei.edu.hk/mod/resource/view.php?id=41).
  6. Please direct students to Learning Commons (CW) or ITS (TY703A) for any further questions.

Moodle Functions/Activities:

N.B. Moodle Resources (https://moodle2122.thei.edu.hk/course/view.php?id=9#section-2):

  1. Upload Teaching Resources: Module Conveners could “Turn editing on” and drag and drop files (presentation ppt, word doc, PDF, etc.) to a topic (or a week). To upload video recording, please upload to Panopto and embed the link in Moodle.
  2. Discussion Forum: Module Conveners could “Add an activity or resource/Forum” to do a lot of peer learning. Module Conveners could ask a question and invite students to reply in order to increase teacher-student and student-student interaction to learning from each other. Module Conveners could separate the class into groups of 5, and create a number of Forum, so that 5 students would be able to discuss a topic and learning from each other. This is important to understand students’ learning before a class, during a class or after a class.
  3. Quiz: Module Conveners could “Add an activity or resource/Quiz” to create a quiz to test students’ understanding. There may be several ways. For example, To create a test (50 MC questions) as the mid-term, or create a refresher test each week (5 MC questions) to recap what is learnt in the week. This is good as a roll-call to all students. You keep a log that all students login and respond. You can setup to provide feedback at different stages, such as immediate after selection of a choice, after submission, after the Quiz, etc.
  4. Turnitin Assignment OR Assignment: Module Conveners could “Add an activity or resource/Turnitin Assignment” to create an assignment and to request students to submit writing/essays as a reflection of learning. You can select to either allow students to receive an originality report by Turnitin or not. You can create another Assignment type if the submission is not the Turnitin formats. This is good as a roll-call to all students. You keep a log that all students login and respond.
  5. Calendar: Make good use of the Calendar to remind activities during the weeks. For a new Assignment activity, it will be added to the Calendar automatically. You may also manually add to the Calendar.
  6. Assignment Moderation: The Learning & Teaching Committee has discussed that Programme Leaders should moderate the assignment submission due day so that students do not submit too many assignments in the same week/day. It is recommended that no more than two major assignments (30% or above) should be due by the same week.
  7. Interactive & Multimedia Courseware Production: Contact LCDI to convert your PowerPoint presentation to self-study learning material. Students can review the reference material on Moodle (Not to be downloaded) at their own pace for as many times as they wish.
  8. Completion of a Task: For each of the activity added, go to setup and add completion function to allow students to self-select the learning status.
  9. Moodle Report Tool: Click the Instructor Dashboard on the navigation menu. Review usage activities of the class visually by different graphs.

Best Practices:

  1. A Regular Upload Schedule: Try to let students know a fixed or regular time of the week for uploading teaching references. Students do not need to check every day for new updates.
  2. An Easy to Understand File Name System: Use some meaningful wording to name a file, such as a date, a week, a lecture, an assignment, etc. Students do not need to download and read in order to know the content. Students can read from the name.
  3. A Notification via Moodle Mobile App: Install the Moodle mobile app, you can then access Moodle via your mobile phone. Moreover, you will receive a notification for any new updates.
  4. Regular Monitor Learning Progress: Select Instructor Dashboard at the navigation menu. You will be able to view the learning progress of each student in the Module. Provide help and support to those needed students early in the semester. The tracking is only meaningful if you have added various kind of activities and the completion function.
